Treating Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Eye Flu is an infection of the eye that causes your eyes to get red, itchy, and watery. Your conjunctiva gets inflamed in this condition. Due to irritation or infection, it gets red and swollen. A number of people leave this problem untreated.

But, this disease is known to be highly contagious. It can easily spread from one person to another. Moreover, it also weakens your immune system. So, make sure you use these natural remedies to get rid of the eye flu.

Natural Remedies to Treat Eye Flu

Barberry Plant

The mountain grape or Berberis vulgaris has been in use since ages for it numerous medicinal benefits. It treats digestive problems, indigestion, infections, and even urinary tract infections. Berberine is a very strong ingredient contained in the plant, which is an isoquinolone alkaloid.

You can use this plant to prepare eyewash. Use water to boil it, and then leave it to get cooled. Once cool, wash your eyes with it. You can also use a poultice with some drops of water over your eyes, by keeping them closed.

Boric Acid

Boric acid, or hydrogen borate, is very useful as an antiseptic to treat minor cuts and burns. It is a weak acid of boron. Its antibacterial properties make it effective for treating acne, ear infections, and Athlete’s foot. Mix boric acid with some water, and use it for washing your eyes. It gives you relief from pink eye.

Honey

Honey is well known for its antibiotic and antibacterial properties. You can treat conjunctivitis by mixing it with milk or water. Honey can be directly put over your eyes to get relief. Mix 3 tablespoons of honey in 2 cups of water, and boil it. Stir it, and let it cool down.

Use this solution to wash your eyes all through the day. This same treatment can be done by using milk instead of water. You can also use warm milk as a compress or eyewash.

Potato

Take a raw potato and cut it in to slices. Place this on your eye a number of times throughout the day. Potato has also got astringent properties that can reduce the swelling on your eyes. You must use it often for treating effectively.

Goldenseal

The astringent, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties of goldenseal help fight the infection, and also kill the bacteria in your eyes. Boil a cup of water and mix 2 teaspoons of goldenseal in it to make a warm solution to wash your eyes with.

You can also mix 1/8 teaspoon of goldenseal, comfrey, and chamomile in a cup of boiled water. After steeping for 15 minutes, strain and use the solution as eye drops.

Teas

The bioflavonoids contained in black and green teas reduce inflammation and fight infections caused by virus and bacteria. Take a moist teabag and place it on your eyes around 4 times daily. This controls the infection. Black tea is more effective due to the tannin contained in it. You can also make a weak solution of tea and use it as eyewash.
