Conjunctivitis is commonly known as pinkeye. It is actually an inflammation of the conjunctiva in your eye. Over the white part of your eye, there is a thin and clear tissue. It lines the inside of your eyelid, and is called the conjunctiva.

Causes of Conjunctivitis

The causes of conjunctivitis are many. Viruses, Bacteria like Chlamydia or Gonorrhea, shampoos, dirt, pool chlorine, smoke, and other such irritants, and allergies of pollen, dust, and a special type of allergy affecting those who wear contact lens are a few common causes. When conjunctivitis is caused by viruses and bacteria, it tends to easily spread.

It is transferred from the affected to person to other people easily. It needs to be diagnosed properly and in time, or else it can turn to be a serious health issue. If pinkeye is found in newborn babies, it needs to be given immediate attention. It should be reported to a doctor for effective treatment, or else it may affect the vision of the baby.

Symptoms of Conjunctivitis

Depending on the cause of the disease, the symptoms may vary. Common symptoms to diagnose conjunctivitis are increase in the amount of tears produced, redness in the inner eyelid or the white part of the eye, thick yellow discharge forming a crust over your eyes, white or green discharge, itchy and burning eyes, blurred vision, and increase in your eyes sensitivity.

In case you find any of these problems with your eyes, you must consult your doctor at once. Go to an ophthalmologist, who will conduct a thorough examination to confirm if you have pinkeye. A sample of your eye may be needed for further testing at the lab. The virus or bacteria that caused the issue are detected to prescribe effective treatment.

How to Treat Conjunctivitis

Depending on the cause of pinkeye, there are different kinds of treatment.


If it is caused by any kind of bacteria, including the bacteria that cause STDs, antibiotics are used for treatment. Eye drops, ointments, r pills are prescribed to be applied on the inside of your eyelid.

You may have to apply three or four times in a day for about a week to treat it. Even if you find the symptoms to have gone, you must continue the course till it finishes.


The common cold virus usually causes this type of pinkeye. This type is highly contagious, so you must be really careful. Wash your hands frequently, and avoid contact with other people. Make sure you do not use contact lenses, or put on any kind of makeup until you treat conjunctivitis.


Any irritants may cause conjunctivitis. You need to wash it off with water to get rid of the irritant. Within a few hours, you will find improvement in your condition. If the cause is any alkaline or acid material, you must seek medical attention.


Allergies also cause conjunctivitis. Treat your allergy immediately and get rid of the allergen. Consult your doctor to know the exact cause and the kind of medication required.
